What goes through your mind?
There are a number of things to consider when approaching a scene. Some of these have been listed below:-
- Dispatch to the incident – plan your route carefully
- Take into account road and weather conditions
- Make a slow and safe approach
- Park defensively in the ‘fend off position’ if appropriate
- Look for debris and vehicle hazards e.g. fuel, downed electricity cables, chemicals, and be aware of other vehicles & pedestrians etc.
- THINK SAFETY – SELF… Scene… and Survivors
- Communicate arrival to control and to other services in attendance
- Approach the scene only if it is safe to do so
- Assess the scene as you walk towards it, try to read the wreckage and assess the number of casualities
- Look for casualties both on the road, in vehicles and walking around
- Call for appropriate back-up and support where needed
- Always be prepared for the unexpected
- Carefully thinking about how to approach an accident may mean the difference between life and death…
