What goes through your mind?

There are a number of things to consider when approaching a scene. Some of these have been listed below:-

  • Dispatch to the incident – plan your route carefully
  • Take into account road and weather conditions
  • Make a slow and safe approach
  • Park defensively in the ‘fend off position’ if appropriate
  • Look for debris and vehicle hazards e.g. fuel, downed electricity cables, chemicals, and be aware of other vehicles & pedestrians etc.

  • THINK SAFETY – SELF… Scene… and Survivors

  • Communicate arrival to control and to other services in attendance
  • Approach the scene only if it is safe to do so
  • Assess the scene as you walk towards it, try to read the wreckage and assess the number of casualities
  • Look for casualties both on the road, in vehicles and walking around
  • Call for appropriate back-up and support where needed
  • Always be prepared for the unexpected

  • Carefully thinking about how to approach an accident may mean the difference between life and death…

DON’T BECOME ANOTHER CASUALTY
